The Coronation – One Year On
With a year passing since the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla, we look back on all of the wonderful work completed for the historic event.
Anne Butcher, Head of Studio and Standards:
‘This time last year saw the end of what the most amazing time for the RSN Embroidery Studio, one none of us will ever forget.
The RSN Embroidery Studio was able to show our enormous range of skills and talent on nine pieces for the Coronation of King Charles III which included conservation, restoration and bespoke embroidery.
I feel truly honoured that I was part of this momentous occasion and part of the ongoing history of the RSN involvements with Coronations.’
Studio Manager, Gemma Murray:
‘I have such fond memories from my time spent working with our fantastic embroidery team on the nine special projects for Their Majesties Coronation this time last year.
It only seems like yesterday that we were all together at Hampton Court Palace, busy working on the pieces.
When I look back at what we achieved as a team I am immensely proud and excited that we were able to demonstrate to the world just how amazing the RSN is.’
Studio core team member Masako Newton:
‘It was an absolute honour to work on the pieces for the 2023 Coronation. I clearly remember the day the King and the Queen came to visit us at the RSN Embroidery Studio.
Out of nine pieces we worked on, my favourite is the Queen’s Robe of Estate, but the Anointing Screen is also very memorable.’

On Thursday evening Anne and Noleen accompanied Gemma into the heart of the City of London where Gemma was a worthy recipient at the Worshipful Company of Girdlers’ annual prize giving event held at Girdlers Hall. Each winner was presented with a medallion by the Master Girdler Sir Thomas Crawley-Boevey Bt. in recognition of their talents and achievements. Gemma’s presentation was preceded by a short speech of support given by Philip Pirie who is well known to many at the RSN. All the worthy recipients and their supporters enjoyed a delicious dinner before happily heading home. A truly memorable evening and a truly worthy winner.
