FREE CPD Webinar - Oral Health through the Life Stages of the Female Patient with Juliette Reeves, Thursday 10th June at 7pm.
There are five stages in a women’s life during which changes in hormone levels make them more susceptible to oral health problems; puberty, the monthly menstruation cycle, when using oral contraceptives, during pregnancy and at menopause.
The genetic and hormonal differences that distinguish women from men are the basis for the clinical changes that occur throughout the life stages of the female patient. These differences result in more frequent and more exaggerated responses to oral bacteria, which initiate gingival and periodontal lesions. Some of these changes are bleeding on probing or with tooth brushing, inflamed gingivae, hyperplastic gingivae, pyrogenic granuloma, tooth mobility and bone loss. In addition, adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes are all potential sequelae of poor oral health.
It is imperative that the dental team understand the effect of hormone status on the oral health of our female patients and recognise our role in the promotion of oral systemic health and its impact on the health of women.
Learning objectives:
• To provide an overview of the female hormones and their actions throughout the life cycle.
• To discuss the potential effect of hormones on the periodontal health of female patients.
• To examine oral conditions associated with female hormone status through puberty, pregnancy and the menopause.
• To provide treatment options and solutions for oral conditions associated with the female life cycle.

Saliva is a vital body fluid and without it continued healthy functioning of the oral cavity would not be possible. As a fluid, saliva facilitates mastication, bolus formation, swallowing, lubrication of the mucosa and speech. Specific components of saliva, however, contribute to antimicrobial activity, buffering actions , digestion, and the protection and maintenance of mucus membrane.
Dry mouth may present itself as a local symptom, or as part of a systemic disease. It may or may not be associated with decreased salivary gland function.
In this presentation on Thursday 13 May at 7pm, Juliette Reeves will aim to update the dental professional on the importance of saliva for oral health and the impact on systemic health and wellbeing.
Learning Outcomes:
-Review current understandings of saliva production and composition.
-Examine new insights surrounding the importance of saliva in systemic health.
-Consider the systemic and clinical implications of xerostomia.
-Discuss the management of xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction.

Drinking too much alcohol is bad for your health! Shock horror! But did you know there is also a link to gum disease?
Studies show that drinking alcohol increases the development of gum disease, It’s the quantity of alcohol consumption not the type of alcohol.
As you can imagine, if you are also a smoker and drink a lot there is significant progression in gum disease.
Sadly, if you are a woman there is evidence that you are more likely to develop gum disease from solely drinking alcohol than men.
You may be wondering why does alcohol have a link to gum disease?
Well, alcohol contains bacteria which causes an imbalance in your mouth which prevents the existing bacteria in your mouth from doing their vital job of maintaining good oral health and longevity of the teeth, this build up causes gum disease.
It’s not all doom and gloom though, you can still drink but in moderation, it’s all about sticking to government guidelines of no more than 14 units a week and making sure to keep up with good oral hygiene practises like brushing your teeth and flossing especially after you’ve been drinking. (Easier said than done we know!!) 🥴
If you’ve noticed your gums are sore, bleeding or inflamed you could have Gingivitis which is treatable, you DON’T want to leave this as this could progress to gum disease which is NOT reversible and can lead to tooth loss.
Try using Gengigel, as it provides an active protection from gum disease and supports the natural healing of inflamed and damaged gums.
If this is something you would like to try, take our Gengigel Gorgeous Gums 7-day trial.
