7 Mountain Rescue calls in 1 evening on Scafell Pike last weekend.

Not surprisingly it was quite dark on Scafell Pike at midnight last Saturday. Due to heavy rain all day there was also a large amount of water in the streams.
During a 12 hour period 7 unguided groups made 999 calls to Mountain Rescue to report that people had become separated from their team, they were lost or could not cross fast flowing streams.
If you intend to go up a mountain during bad weather and with poor visibility due to fog and darkness, then you need to be extremely good at navigation. Or hire a local guide.
Mountain Rescue are all volunteers. And surprisingly to some callers they will not necessarily get out of bed at 03.00 and come and look for you because your group has split up and you don't know where you are.

An amazing day out today doing some classic Scottish winter mountaineering. The weather forecast was not great but we were extremely lucky with calm and dry weather all day, we even had some blue skies.
Avalanche hazard was a major consideration and the usual summer route to access these peaks up the Corrie at the back of the Lost Valley was not possible due to the risk.
