Part 6:
"Ownership: Why I'll always admit when I don't know something"
But I'll never bluff and risk your project.
"I don't know, but I'll find out."
Five words that separate professionals from chancers.
Last month, I was asked to clean a heritage building with unusual stone cladding. The property manager expected instant answers about treatment, pressure settings, chemicals.
My response? "I've never worked with this specific stone. Give me 48 hours to research it and consult the manufacturer."
His reaction? Relief.
He'd already had two contractors give contradictory instant answers.
Here's what taking ownership means:
When I know something: I explain exactly what I'll do and why.
When I'm uncertain: I say so immediately and explain how I'll get the right answer.
When I make a mistake: I own it, fix it at my cost, change processes.
This costs me jobs sometimes. People want instant confidence, not honest uncertainty.
But it saves me from disasters.
Every building is different. Every surface has quirks. Pretending otherwise isn't confidence, it's arrogance.
And arrogance ruins projects.

Every day Im still learning things...
Different areas have different challenges.
Coastal properties like Exmouth Marina and Lympstone deal with salt spray and marine growth.
Rural locations around Cullompton get agricultural run-off and organic staining. Commercial sites like in Plymouth face heavy traffic and pollution.
What works perfectly at Exmouth Beach Pub might need adjusting for somewhere like Totnes or Torquay.
This local knowledge isn't something you get from YouTube or a weekend course - it comes from actually doing the work, year after year, in all conditions. 📚
Every area teaches you something new about surfaces, weather patterns, and what actually works long-term.
What's the biggest challenge your local area throws at outdoor surfaces? 🤷♂️

Funny thing happens when I'm working on a driveway or patio...
Within an hour, there's usually a neighbour having a chat over the fence, asking questions, taking a closer look at what's happening.
By the time I'm packing up, I've got at least two more enquiries for the same street. 📞
It's not just about keeping up with the Joneses - it's about that moment when you realize your outdoor spaces could look that good too.
Just finished work in Budleigh Salterton - within hours, had enquiries from three neighbours on the same street. Now the whole area looks brilliant. ✨
Sometimes all it takes is seeing what's possible to realize you deserve better than green, grimy surfaces.
What's the best improvement you've seen a neighbour make that got you thinking about your own place? 🤷♂️

"I'll wait until the weather's better to get the cleaning done."
Here's the thing - your patio, driveway, and render are getting hit by weather 365 days a year. Rain, frost, sun, wind - it's all taking its toll whether you're watching or not.
The best time to clean? When it needs it, regardless of what the sky's doing. I work in all weathers (safely, of course) and the results last just as long.
Just wrapped up jobs in Fraddon and Torquay during what felt like the wettest week of the year. Homeowners were amazed at the difference, rain or shine. ☔
Don't let the British weather dictate when your home looks its best.
