Determined for an improvement on the performance from our last meeting, Tayforth Ladies invited Aberdour to Peffermill for the first round of the Challenge Cup. With a few new faces and changes to positions, it took Tayforth some time to find their footing and unfortunately losing six goals to a relentless Aberdour mid and forward line in the process.

Despite this, Megan MacIver pulled off many excellent saves in her first appearance in goals, picking the screamers out of the air with style. Towards the end of the first half Siobháin Lane scored the first goal for Tayforth after a textbook set of passes between the midfield and forward line.

With Aberdour adding three more goals to their total before the break, Tayforth put their heads down and came into the second half a different side. Marking was tighter and passes were cleaner, allowing new start Poppy Watson to score her first Tayforth goal after sustained pressure on the Aberdour keeper. The midfield did well to dominate possession of the ball in the latter half of the game and were well propped up by another new start in Kirsten Finnie.

The final score ended 3-10 to Aberdour but the girls have much to be proud of today, not the least pulling off 2-1 in the second half. Player of the match most deservedly goes to Megan for a standout performance in goals in a game that otherwise could have ended very differently. We look forward now to a new challenge against a freshly formed Kilmallie side next Sunday.

Match report!

Tayforth took to the field today for their second-round cup fixture in the Sutherland Cup against Strachur-Dunoon. Played in the first truly tropical conditions of the season, the pitch was in excellent shape. Encouragingly, Tayforth once again fielded a full bench, a welcome sight after a long stretch without.
The game began with intensity, as both sides battled hard early on. Strachur-Dunoon were the first to make their mark, capitalising on space to find the bottom corner. They extended their lead shortly before the water break, intercepting across goal and finishing well. Tayforth showed promise with a number of shies into the box and a few efforts just drifting wide, but Strachur added two more before the break to take firm control.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, Strachur-Dunoon maintained pressure and added two further goals. Credit must go to the Tayforth defence, who remained organised and resilient throughout, limiting what could have been a heavier scoreline.

In the closing stages, Tayforth looked to change momentum, pushing half-back Niel Shearer into the wings. This tactical shift brought renewed energy and attacking intent, with the side applying sustained pressure. While it didn’t result in a goal, it reflected the team’s determination and willingness to adapt.

Despite the result, this was another encouraging performance from Tayforth, a committed, collective effort with no shortage of fight right through to the final whistle.

On Sunday, Tayforth Ladies were back at Peffermill facing one of their biggest challenges of the season so far against Ardnamurchan. The visiting team opened the scoring very early on with a quick volley from the throw up straight to an effective shot on target that left Tayforth on the back foot.

The rest of the first half was a tense affair with Tayforth dominating in possession of the ball but a strong Ard defence left them unable to find the back of the net. The team had their work cut out for them playing 6 aside with the midfield shuffled up and Rosie Sumsion in particular did well dropping back to a more defensive position.

After a regroup at half time, Tayforth returned with renewed determination and energy in the second half. Their continued pressure on Ardnamurchan was rewarded as Siobháin Lane equalled the scoreline not long into the half and the home team was then able to breathe a sigh of relief after two more goals were added shortly after, completing a hat trick for Siobháin and sealing her Player of the Match.

Thank you to Ardnamurchan for making the long trip down and for a great game with limited players. Tayforth Ladies now have a gap until their Challenge cup tie in early May where they will be looking to build on the momentum of the season so far to improve on their previous performance against Aberdour.
