When I first started working with young people, parents and carers were never part of the conversation.
The work took place in settings where maintaining almost complete confidentiality was the safest and most appropriate thing to do.
When I set up Augmenting Therapy CIC, I wanted to do things differently.
Alongside our therapeutic groups for neurodivergent young people, I wanted a space that was entirely for parents and carers so they could be supported by others who were going through similar experiences and feel less alone.
For the last year, I have had the joy of running a free support group for parents and carers in Cardiff, and next week we are inviting the brilliant ND Community Connectors CIC in to share the important work they do and to offer more help and support.
Where: Cardiff Meeting House, Cardiff
When: 24th April
Time: 10-12
If you know anyone who would like to join, please share this with them. (link in comments).

If you’re supporting neurodivergent young people, you’ll know how many are facing barriers to school attendance and high levels of anxiety.
Struggling to navigate their way through environments and systems that feel like they’re not designed for them, they are often left feeling overwhelmed, stuck or unhappy.
But time and again I’ve seen that when we genuinely involve them, listen to what they tell us and adapt our approach to meet their needs, everything changes.
That’s why I created the Augmenting Therapy approach, co-designed with young people who told me traditional therapy hadn’t worked for them.
Because I believe with the right support, we can all reach our full potential.
What we do
We run creative therapeutic groups that blend art, storytelling and ethical immersive technology to help neurodivergent young people:
Reduce anxiety
Make sense of school attendance barriers
Build social connection
We also support parents, carers and professionals so the whole system around each young person feels better informed, more confident and able to meet their needs.
We partner with youth organisations and schools to deliver tailored group programmes, and we stay alongside teams for as long as we’re needed.
The approach:
I hold a strong belief that therapy needs to change if it is going to genuinely meet the needs of neurodivergent young people. Too many of the approaches we rely on still expect clients to communicate, imagine, reflect and process in very narrow ways.
In response to this, I created an immersive therapy programme that blends technology with elements of guided imagery, creativity and play. The approach offers young people alternative, non-verbal ways to express how they feel, explore their inner world, and make sense of their experiences without being expected to speak aloud.
Using tools such as augmented reality, gaming technologies, animation and digital storytelling, young people are supported to build worlds, objects and narratives that reflect what is happening for them emotionally.
At its heart, this programme is about meeting young people where they are, honouring how they naturally communicate, and creating therapeutic spaces that feel accessible, engaging and meaningful
Everything centres the voices and experiences of the people we support.
What people say
Young people report feeling calmer, more connected and more able to access education.
Parents and carers describe the support as “life-changing.”
