WHY? – OUR VOLUNTEERS’ STORIES 🏍️❤️

Every volunteer has a reason. This is one of ours.

I’ve been a Blood Bike rider for eight years to help others, riding as a way of saying thank you for the care I received many years ago after an accident at home that resulted in a broken back. Thanks to the incredible care I received, I went on to live a normal life 💙

While waiting outside a hospital for a scheduled collection, I was approached by a doctor who was asking about Blood Bikes. Looking at him, I had a feeling I knew him. I asked his name — and it turned out he was my consultant spine surgeon.

When I told him “it was you who sorted me”, he looked me up and down and said:

“I did a good job then, didn’t I — and you’re doing a good job for us.”

I think that says it all.

Then last year, life came full circle. I spent eight nights in ITU suffering with pneumonia. Once again, I found myself relying on the NHS — and without them, I’m not sure I would have survived.

That’s why I ride 💙🏍️
