Song of Autumn/Chanson d’automne – Paul Verlaine 15/10/2022

Autumn is a melancholic season. The Song of Autumn (‘‘Chanson d’automne’’) was written by Paul Verlaine, a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement in the 19th-century. His poetry was known for its elegance, refinement and musicality. This poem expresses the sadness and disappointment in the poet's heart. Each stanza is formed by continuous division of a long sentence, extending like filaments fluttering in the air, which just corresponds to the sobbing sound of the violin. The poem was also adapted into a French song.

During World War II, in June 1944, when the Allies was planning the Normandy landings, the first few lines of the "Autumn Song" were broadcast by BBC as a coded signal to the French resistance that the invasion of Normandy was imminent.
