Thereโs that MIT study circling the social web, where they found that heavy ChatGPT users couldnโt recall their own writing minutes later.
A bit sensationalist imo, but researchers called it โcognitive offloading.โ
The hippocampus (memory), prefrontal cortex (planning), and anterior cingulate (critical thinking) all went quiet.
Even after removing AI, the suppression lingered. They called it โcognitive debt.โ
So this isnโt just about tools anymore. Itโs about _sovereignty (_and protecting our own minds).
Weโve seen it before:
โข GPS eroded spatial memory.
โข Calculators dulled mental math.
โข Now, AI threatens to flatten critical thought and memory itself.
The danger isnโt the toolโitโs unconscious design.
If you let AI write for you, it thinks for you.
If you use AI as the compass itself, you lose internal orientation.
But thereโs another path.
When used wisely, AI can ๐ข๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ญ๐ช๐ง๐บ cognition:
โข Let your brain do 80%, AI support the 20% (or maybe 50/50, you decide).
โข Ask AI to critique, not create.
โข Debate with it. Question it. Sharpen yourself against it.
This is why I built Conscious Stack Designโข.
Stacks shape culture. Tools shape thought.
If we donโt design them with intention, they design _us_.
The opportunity in the AI era isnโt to sound like everyone else.
Itโs to keep your voice, your orientation, and your cognitive sovereignty intact.
Because when sameness floods the system, authentic signal cuts through.
