Happy 89th Birthday to Institute Trustee Wayne Shorter! We thank you for sharing your incredible music with us all these years, and for your continuous dedication to teaching and inspiring the next generation of musicians.

The pandemic has not stopped Shorter from sharing his immense insights with the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Class of 2023, including during this virtual residency last fall (shown above). He told the students to be “imaginative while soloing,” and to “create as much as possible within nothing.” Truly the words of a master musician!
