I am extremely saddened to hear the passing away of Obbo Zegeye Asfaw, the champion of "Land to the Tiller" bill in promoting the idea, drafting and translating it into practice. Obbo Zegeye a trans-generational icon and an exemplary community servant lived for a purpose all his life. He never gave up on trying to serve the people of Ethiopia no matter how the country's politics failed to change from authoritarianism to democracy. He remained to be a pragmatic intellectual and stateman throughout his life. Needless to mention he was the architect of the proclamations of "Land to the Tiller and "Government Ownership of Urban Lands and Extra Urban Houses,” which he drafted and submitted to the Derg government for endorsement into laws. With regard to the land reform bill in particular, he played a decisive role in executing it across the country taking the lead as a Minster of Land Reform during the early days of the declaration of "Land to the Tiller"
In Ethiopia's political discourse Zegeye will be remembered as matchless figure is for the legacy he left behind in changing the course of history for the benefit of the Ethiopian broader mass. Obbo Zegeye will remain tall on records and in living memories for the land reform. He was a man who put the final nail in the feudal system’s coffin by reinstating the land to its true owners and by making justice abolishing the archaic serfdom in Ethiopia. Even though he languished in the Derg's notorious prisons for a decade without due court process, he demonstrated extraordinary resilience after his release working against the tide to promote a just cause both in public positions and in nongovernmental organizations to change the lives of Ethiopians. He reached out to grassroots through "Hunde" and other nongovernmental organizations to help thousands.
May Obbo Zegeye's soul rest in eternal power.
My condolences to his family, friends, fans and the Ethiopian people whom he served relentlessly.
