A powerful atmospheric river brought abundant rain to coastal British Columbia, Canada, and southeastern Alaska between Sept. 21-24. It is thought to be one of the most intense atmospheric rivers to move across the area since satellite’s began tracking them in 2000.

This image shows the potent storm as captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite on September 22. The elongated stream of water v***r, the hallmark of atmospheric rivers, had reached the west coast of North America after crossing the Pacific from Southeast Asia.

When atmospheric rivers travel over land, they release their moisture as rain or snow. This led to significant rainfall across the region with some places having 2 to 4 inches of rain each day. https://go.nasa.gov/4gFZPFA
