According to authorities, Sheldon was critically injured during the encounter and transported to a local hospital, where he later passed away from his injuries. Officials stated the individual responsible fled the scene before later being found deceased in a nearby apartment.

Sheldon served with the Mooresville Police Department for six years. Fellow officers and community members remembered him as a dedicated public servant whose work reflected the responsibility and sacrifice carried by law enforcement officers every day.
