Ivan The Terrible and His Son Ivan, by Ilya Repin (1883-1885)
The work depicts the immediate aftermath of Tsar Ivan the Terrible mortally wounding his son, Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich, during a fit of rage (a historically disputed event). It is a powerful portrayal of guilt, anguish, and remorse on the face of the Tsar, contrasting sharply with the serene, almost forgiving, expression of the dying Tsarevich. Repin conceived the painting after the political violence and assassinations of his time, linking the theme to the devastating consequences of violence and the breakdown of human relationships. The use of a dominant, dramatic "blood red" color in the carpet and background enhances the atmosphere of tragedy and gore.
