The term engineering itself has a much more recent etymology, deriving from the word engineer, dating back to 1325.
An Engineer (literally operates an engine) was originally referred to as “a constructor of military engines.”
The term engineering is derived from the Latin ingenium, meaning “cleverness” and ingeniare, meaning “to contrive, devise.”

Chemical engineers have different duties, some of which are:

- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Conduct research to develop new and improved manufacturing processes

The oil and gas industry is divided into three sectors:

Upstream operations which include conducting geological & geophysical surveys, locating potential oil fields, obtaining permission for drilling, drilling wells and operating them, recovering raw materials.

Midstream operations such as transportation, storage and wholesale marketing.

Downstream operations which include processing raw materials, marketing and distributing products.
