● The following words start with a capital letter in German: 1. nouns
2. names (persons, countries, cities, ...)
3. beginning of a sentence
4. Sie (formal)

● In a German sentence there is no comma between position 1 and position 2, e.g.:
Nach dem Frühstück, gehe ich nach Hause. 
Nach dem Frühstück gehe ich nach Hause.

● The verb in a normal German sentence is in position 2.

● In position 1 is either the subject or the time or the place, e.g.:
Ich war letzten Sommer in Paris. Letzten Sommer war ich in Paris.

● The words „und”, „oder”, „aber” are in position 0, e.g.: Ich bin krank, aber ich gehe nicht zum Arzt.

● To write a letter / an e-mail in the Past Tense, you must use „Präteritum” and „Perfekt“:
Präteritum for the verbs „sein” & „haben”, e.g.: Ich war krank. Ich hatte Fieber.
Perfekt for all other verbs, e.g.: Ich bin zum Arzt gegangen.

● With “wenn” (=when), “weil” (=because), “dass” (=that) you must use a sub-clause, which means that the conjugated verb is at the end of the sentence, e.g.: Ich gehe zum Arzt, weil ich krank bin.
Ich bin zu City Stars gegangen, weil ich eine neue Jeans kaufen wollte.
Ich habe kein Geld mehr, weil ich viele Sachen gekauft habe.
Ich habe heute Abend keine Zeit zum Lernen, weil ich ausgehe.

● To make smooth connections between the sentences you must use transition words. Some of them are:

zuerst first gestern yesterday
dann then letzte Woche last week
danach after that letzten Monat last month
später later letztes Jahr last year
nach dem Frühstück after breakfast am Morgen in the morning
nach dem Mittagessen after lunch am Mittag at noon
nach dem Abendessen after dinner am Nachmittag in the afternoon
nach der Uni after university am Abend in the evening
um .... Uhr at ... o’clock in der Nacht at night
von .... bis .... Uhr from ... till ... o’clock am Ende at the end
