The gorilla trekking trip starts with a 2.5 hour drive from Kigali at 4:30 am arriving to Musanze at 7:00 am for registration and splitting to groups. Each group is guided to one of the ten gorilla families in the reserve.

The trek is not an easy one and requires some effort to hike up the mountains, but upon request, an individual can be assigned to a group visiting one of the gorilla families living closer to the registration center at the reserve. The hike can take up to 3 hours to reach the gorilla family and 3 hours back to the center.

Visitors are advised to wear gaiters, gloves, waterproof hiking shoes, and relaxed cargo pants as the hike may be on severe terrain.
