Here we see a preparatory outline for the poster for the Salon des Cent 20th Exhibition (1896), created to announce the 20th exhibition of the Salon des Cent, held at the premises of the celebrated art journal La Plume.

It is with this poster that Mucha’s archetypal style first comes into sharp focus — a distinctive visual language built on flowing curved lines, delicate tones, flattened colours, and bold, confident outlines.

Zde vidíme přípravnou kresbu plakátu pro Salon des Cent 20th Exhibition (1896), vytvořeného u příležitosti 20. výstavy Salonu des Cent, která se konala v prostorách slavného uměleckého časopisu La Plume.

Rooted in the natural world, this remarkable movement gave us some of the most captivating imagery ever committed to canvas and print — delicate tendrils, fluid organic forms, swooping lines, eccentric geometry, and figures of an almost otherworldly elegance.

Few artists embodied these ideals as completely as Alphonse Mucha. His iconic poster designs didn’t merely reflect the Art Nouveau style — they helped define it. Through his luminous women, intricate botanical borders, and signature harmony of line and ornament, Mucha elevated commercial art into something truly transcendent, gifting the movement much of its enduring visual identity.

Tento pozoruhodný umělecký směr zakořeněný v přírodním světě nám dal jedny z nejpůsobivějších obrazů, jaké kdy byly zachyceny na plátně či v tisku — jemné úponky, plynné organické tvary, elegantní křivky, výstřední geometrie a postavy takřka nadpozemské elegance.

Jen málokdo ztělesňoval tyto ideály tak dokonale jako Alfons Mucha. Jeho ikonické plakáty pomáhaly utvářet styl secese. Prostřednictvím svých ženských postav, komplexních botanických rámů a charakteristické harmonie linie a ornamentu povýšil Mucha komerční umění na něco skutečně transcendentního a daroval tomuto hnutí velkou část jeho vizuální identity.

In this poster for the British company Cycles Perfecta (1902), he captures the freedom and exhilaration of cycling with effortless grace. The subject’s flowing golden hair — one of the hallmarks of his iconic female figures — sweeps across the entire composition, infusing it with a wonderful sense of movement.

Jedna z věcí, která dělala Muchu výjimečným, byla jeho schopnost najít krásu v jakémkoli námětu a ztvárnit ji s uchvacující elegancí.

Na tomto plakátu pro britskou společnost Cycles Perfecta (1902) zachycuje svobodu a vzrušení spojené s jízdou na kole s bezpříkladnou lehkostí. Vlající zlaté vlasy ženské postavy — jeden z charakteristických znaků jeho ikonických figur — nechává Mucha rozvinout přes celou kompozici, čímž jí dodává nádherný pocit pohybu.

Just as he did with the seasons, Mucha also turned his attention to the individual months.

Here we have his interpretation of June — a young woman with brown hair, absently toying with the flowers tucked into her hair. She wears a flowing white dress with a delicate floral detail on the bodice, while blooming flowers spill across the rest of the composition.

Zde vidíme jeho interpretaci června. Mladá žena s hnědými vlasy si zasněně pohrává s květinami, které má do vlasů vpletené. Na sobě má vzdušné bílé šaty s jemným květinovým detailem na živůtku, zatímco další rozkvetlé květiny zaplňují zbytek kompozice.

A new stop along the Mucha Trail opened today in Brno! You can find the bench of Alphonse Mucha by the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and an open air exhibition at Moravské náměstí.

With June upon us and summer just around the corner, we’re turning to Mucha’s 1900 depiction of Summer from The Seasons series. 🌾

Summer is portrayed strolling through a wheat field, arms filled with lush bouquets of poppies, daisies, and cornflowers. She wears a long peach dress with a gently exposed upper back, her gaze drifting over her shoulder toward some distant point.

Take a moment to appreciate the ornate frame — and notice the delicate touches of mint blue woven throughout.

Léto kráčí polem plným pšenice, náručí plné kytic máků, sedmikrásek a chrp. Na sobě má jemné broskvové šaty s lehce odhalenou horní částí zad a její pohled se obrací přes rameno někam do dálky.

In this heartwarming 1925 portrait, Mucha captured his son Jiří — born in 1915 in Prague and the younger of his two children. Growing up in the castle at Zbiroh, young Jiří had a unique opportunity to observe his father’s work, even posing alongside his sister for many of Mucha’s sketches and studies.

As this portrait reveals, Mucha hoped his son would carry on his artistic legacy. Jiří had other plans, however — and what wonderful plans they were! Instead, Jiří became a writer and his father’s biographer, contributing to the revival of Mucha’s popularity after the 1960s.

Mucha v tomto milém portrétu z roku 1925 zachytil svého syna Jiřího, který se narodil v roce 1915 v Praze a byl druhým z Muchových dvou dětí. Jiří vyrůstal na zámku Zbiroh a jako malý chlapec měl možnost pozorovat otce při práci. Stejně jako jeho sestra stál modelem pro celou řadu jeho skic a studií.

Jak ukazuje tento portrét, Mucha si přál, aby se Jiří stal také umělcem. Jiří si ale místo toho vybral profesi spisovatele a napsal životopis svého otce, čímž přispěl k oživení Muchovy popularity po roce 1960.
