Some say starlight is light years old by the time it reaches us here on earth. That means, it’s quite literally light that has travelled all the way across the universe to get here, to be here with us. Not quite in waves yet not quite not in waves either. Not quite in discrete pieces but not quite not in discrete pieces either. And some say it just flies right past us or through us like laser beams and off onto the next planet. But others say it burrows deep down into soil in fields and meadows and pots and even deep down inside each of us like seeds. And sometimes, if you turn all the lights off real dark, you can see those seeds shining with their little remnant starlight still.

What would you do if you had your own giant white bird of paradise on whose back you could traverse all land and seas? Well, you’d ask her to stretch her giant wings wide, bend her knees and arch her massive back so you could climb on. Then you’d feel her velvet white feathers and pat her long neck and then you’d position yourself and hold on tight for all your life as she launched off into the clouds. And you’d fly with her to the tallest mountain peaks and across the widest oceans. You’d fly over the greatest cities and the driest deserts and you’d see the way the rivers and hills run beneath you like veins through the land and just like the creases in the palm of your hand. And then you’d lean forward and whisper in her ear, “take me home.”
