The three-pronged, "M-shaped" design was famously intended to cater to two types of games: 3D analog stick games (hold the center and right prongs) and traditional 2D D-pad games (hold the left and center prongs). This was during the industry's shift from 2D to 3D gaming.
The trigger on the back of the center handle (the Z-button) was a novel idea. It was easily accessible with the index finger when using the analog stick, providing a new input that became standard for actions like targeting in Zelda or shooting in first-person games. This helped pioneer the modern two-shoulder-button layout.
