Cameroon’s former Speaker of the National Assembly, Cavayé Yéguié Djibril, has been buried in his native Mada, in the Tokombéré area of the Far North Region.

The burial was conducted in strict Muslim tradition, only hours after the announcement of his death at the age of 86.

Cavayé’s funeral closes the final chapter of one of the longest political careers in Cameroon’s modern history.

For 34 years, he presided over the National Assembly, becoming one of the most enduring faces of the Biya-era political establishment.

His death comes only weeks after he was replaced as Speaker, ending more than three decades at the head of parliament.

As tributes continue to pour in from state officials and ruling party figures, public debate over his legacy is also intensifying.
