"A CONSUMING FIRE" (Isaiah 33:10-24). Dearly Beloved in Christ Jesus, we thank God for his grace and mercy for the dawn of another new day. Fire has multiple uses. It is used to burn up grass we don't want and to cook food for people to eat. People weep when forests, houses, business premises and some properties are set ablaze by fire. It is indeed difficult to rebuild and reconstruct what has been consumed by fire.
God used the image of a raging fire to talk about his power, divine authority and might (Isaiah 33:10). He said the Assyrians were like dry grass and stubble that would become consumed by fire. The godless people in the land were called to be afraid of the consuming fire that could burn up everything. Fire reminds us that God is holy and will not tolerate fraud, bribery, corruption, murder and the wrongs of his people (Isaiah 33:15).
God is interested in people who refuse to become part of godless attitudes and behaviours. He says those who continue to live in sin will be like thorn bushes cut down and tossed in a fire (Isaiah 33:12). The fear of the Lord is the quiet, peaceful, and overwhelming understanding that overtakes us in the presence of a holy God. Sin before the holy God deserves punishment and destruction of lives and property in the context of the Old Testament scriptures.
God is indeed a consuming fire that grass cannot stand its heat without being burnt. This is what leads us to talk about the fear of God. We sinners cannot remain proud, selfish and arrogant in the presence of the just judge, King of the world and the lawgiver. We are lowly human beings who need God's grace and mercy every moment of our lives. He does not leave broken human beings without hope but lifts them up when they come to him in humility.
He showed his mighty power and strength only after the nation of Israel mourned over their sins and wrongs. Lebanon was shamed, Sharon was left as a desert, Bashan and Carmel were emptied of their treasures (Isaiah 33:10-11)
