[EN] Why does a book about Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill read today almost like a piece of political reporting, with an unsettling sense of déjà vu?
The Lausanne publisher Éditions Noir sur Blanc has released the French translation of British historian Giles Milton’s The Stalin Affair: The Impossible Alliance That Won the War (L’Affaire Staline : l’impossible alliance qui a permis de vaincre Hi**er).
This is far more than just another book about the Second World War. Milton presents the impossible alliance between democracies and dictatorship as a story of personal illusions, diplomatic theatre, media manipulation and the dangerous fascination of “strong power”.
Roosevelt tries to “charm” Stalin. Churchill admires his “frankness”. The American press attacks its own diplomat, Averell Harriman, for seeing the Soviet Union too clearly. And journalists often prefer sensation to genuine understanding.

The collection of Switzerland’s former richest man in a “Petersburg hang” 02/06/2026

[EN] The collection of one of the most controversial collectors of the twentieth century — seen in a new light.
At Kunsthaus Zürich, all 205 works from the collection of Emil Georg Bührle are now on view, from seventeenth-century Dutch painting to Impressionism and modernism. But this is not only about masterpieces.
The new “Petersburg hang” invites a different way of looking, not only at the paintings, but at the history of the collection itself: provenance, restitution, responsibility.
How should such a collection be shown today? Can a museum be a place not only of beauty, but also of honest dialogue?

The collection of Switzerland’s former richest man in a “Petersburg hang” Visitors to Kunsthaus Zürich can now see all 205 masterpieces from the collection of the Emil Georg Bührle Foundation, whose provenance has been examined since 2002. A Picnic with Tarkovsky Aboard a Container Ship 28/05/2026

[EN] What happens when a French artist crosses the Atlantic aboard a container ship?
Not a report about sailors. Not a maritime novel. Not even a travel diary.
But a hypnotic film without dialogue, twelve watercolours, and an unexpected encounter with the Strugatsky brothers and Andrey Tarkovsky in the middle of the ocean.
Yvan Salomone’s exhibition at Geneva’s Sonia Zannettacci gallery became, for me, a journey into the strange industrial world of a container ship, where the noise of the engine room, sirens, creaking metal, and the “emptiness” of the ocean come together almost like a musical score.
And yes, even there, a “Russian accent” emerged. More in my new article.

A Picnic with Tarkovsky Aboard a Container Ship The title of my blog suggests a connection with something, if not Russian, then at least connected to the Russian-speaking world – I had to set myself some kind of framework. And it can be frustrating when you want to write about something and no such connection can be found. But that happens rare...

[EN] Nabucco at La Scala turned out to be a production not only about Ancient Babylon, but also about power, crowds, memory and human humiliation.
Riccardo Chailly is concluding his tenure as the theatre’s Music Director with one of Verdi’s most symbolic operas. The new production is directed by the South African stage director Alessandro Talevi, making his La Scala debut with a staging in which the biblical story suddenly begins to feel disturbingly contemporary.
On stage: Anna Netrebko, Luca Salsi, Francesco Meli, Michele Pertusi… But music is not the only thing that matters here. The enormous cracked dome hanging above the stage, “Jacob’s Ladder”, Fenena with her shaved head, recalling the women publicly humiliated after the Second World War, and of course Va’ pensiero, the chorus that long ago became something far greater for Italy than simply an operatic number.
How strangely contemporary the story of a ruler who decided he was a god sounds today.

From Schubert to Chopin: on time and memory 21/05/2026

[EN] What happens when Arcadi Volodos walks onto the stage?
On 8 June at Victoria Hall, a concert not to be missed. A pianist for whom technique is no longer an issue and for whom sound has become a way of thinking, he shapes his programme as a statement: from Schubert to Chopin, from light to memory.
Schubert’s Sonata D 894, almost without gestures yet with a rare inner balance. The mazurkas, the Prelude and Chopin’s Second Sonata, no longer form but a state, where the rhythm wavers and the music becomes an experience.
A concert in which what matters is not only what is heard, but what remains.
Shall we meet on 8 June? Then hurry, only a few tickets remain! https://rusaccent.ch/en/blogpost/schubert-chopin-time-and-memory

From Schubert to Chopin: on time and memory On 8 June, the remarkable pianist Arcadi Volodos will appear at Victoria Hall. If you have not yet heard him, do not miss the opportunity to discover a truly great musician.

Paata Burchuladze: The Voice Behind Bars 19/05/2026

I am not a politician, and I have never liked politics. But this time, I could not remain silent.
My new text is not only about the fate of a great artist. It is also a story of friendship, loyalty, and a voice they are trying to silence. https://rusaccent.ch/en/blogpost/paata-burchuladze-voice-behind-bars
