📣 PSA: Your email signature is more than a simple signoff. 📣

One of the best ways to set boundaries and manage expectations in your side hustle is to clearly outline your working hours in your email signature.

Do you only respond to emails in the mornings, evenings and weekends? Or maybe you guarantee a response within a certain number of days. However you work best, 👏🏾spell👏🏾it👏🏾out👏🏾 in your email signature so that people know when they should (and shouldn't) expect to hear from you.

This might seem like a super small thing, but you'd be amazed at how much it can help manage your audience's expectations and take the pressure off you to always be “on.” And if you're not sure what your updated signature should say, here's mine — feel free to steal it (and thank me later!):
 
"Heads up! As a part-time business, we're willing to bet our working hours probably look a little different from yours. Please don't feel you need to get back to us outside of your normal working hours!"

As a small business dedicated to supporting and empowering side hustlers and part-time businesses, I've always been cognizant of my pricing. Being able to offer professional and quality services at an accessible price point is something I've always prided myself on. But let's be real...ouside is expensive. The costs of many of my business tools (most of which are already priced in USD — *cries in Canadian 🥲*) have gone up, and my pricing needs to follow suit.

So, as of Feb 1, the price of my basic branding package will be increasing from $1,700 CAD to $1,920 CAD.

My brand strategy add-on will be increasing from $1,500 CAD to $1,700 CAD.

(The price of my 1:1 strategy sessions and other add-on services is unchanged.)

📢📢 Minimal design does *NOT* have to boring!

When I started designing The Flaming Wick, I wanted to create something that was simple but at the same time, could be bold enough to turn heads and stop people mid-scroll.

Like every design, it took a lot of back and forth, and I just about hated the first bajillion things I designed, lol. But who knew two letters could totally elevate an entire brand?! 🤌🏾😍

Ok, dramatic, I know, but like...it actually *painssss* me when I hear people say, "it's just a logo," or, "I don't want a strategy; I just need a logo," or, "My logo is my brand."

Or...k, you get where I'm going with this, right?

Your logo is soooo much more than "typed text with a small icon next to it" (verbatim what someone once said to me 🥴) — it's quite literally a visual expression of your brand's strategy, personality and values.

As with all my client projects, the bulk of the time spent creating the Belonging First visual identity was focused on the underlying strategy: what the business had to offer, who to, and how their offering differed from that of their competitors. We zeroed in on how that offering should make clients feel and then explored ways we could replicate and evoke that feeling through design.

From there, we identified core brand words to guide the overall design and created mood boards to explore what those words would look like when expressed through colour, fonts and brand photography. It's only once we refined the mood boards and landed on the right creative direction that I started designing the actual branding.

And the result?👆🏾👌🏾

So, the next time you hear someone say, "it's just a logo" — or maybe you're the one thinking it😬 — I hope you'll remember this post. Instead of seeing "just a logo," hopefully you'll see:

• A purposeful design that goes beyond surface-level aesthetics

• A strategy that's being expressed visually

• A reflection of a business' unique offering

• A direct line of connection to a brand's target audience
