Asthir explores the tension between vulnerability and survival in a world that demands conformity. Through a cast of 7 dancers, the work delves into the emotional weight of the social masks we wear, questioning whether they protect us or separate us from our true selves.
The piece invites reflection on when we wear these masks and whether we are even aware of them. How much weight do we carry when we hide our true selves? Can a mask genuinely shield us, or does it ultimately distance us from our own identity?
Drawing from a blend of contemporary movement styles and theatrical elements, the choreography embodies the complex emotional landscapes of its characters. Rooted in a cross cultural dialogue between Canadian and Indian contemporary dance practices, Asthir creates a hybrid aesthetic that reflects the fluid nature of identity and emotional expression.
