FOSSY – a curated directory for discovering the best free and open‑source software. FOSS is everywhere now, but finding high‑quality, actively maintained projects (beyond “most starred on GitHub”) is still painful. You either scroll random lists, bounce between GitHub tabs, or rely on word of mouth.
FOSSY tries to fix that in a few ways:
- Live GitHub signal
We combine stars, activity, and community signals to surface projects that are both popular and alive, not just historical one‑hit wonders.
- Curated, hand‑picked entries
Every project is reviewed before it lands in the directory, so it’s not just another auto‑scraped list of repos.
- Explore by language & platform
Filter by stack (e.g., Rust CLI tools, Python data libraries, JS frameworks, self‑hosted apps, etc.) to quickly find tools that actually fit your workflow.
- Community & contributors
See who’s driving each project, get a feel for the health of the community, and discover contributors worth following.
- Top all‑time & daily picks
Browse evergreen all‑time lists or check in for featured daily projects if you just want inspiration or something cool to try next.
Who is it for?
- Developers looking for their next project to contribute to
- Builders hunting for reliable open‑source alternatives to SaaS tools
- Curious folks who just enjoy exploring the FOSS ecosystem
Today’s launch is just the start. I’d love your feedback on:
- What other signals you’d like to see (security, governance, docs quality, etc.)
- Which categories or languages you want better coverage on
- Ideas for community features (collections, discussions, contributor profiles, etc.)
If you’re into FOSS, I’d really appreciate you taking it for a spin and telling me what feels missing or rough. I’ll be in the comments all day answering questions and collecting ideas for the next iteration. 🚀
What’s the one FOSS project you think absolutely deserves to be featured in FOSSY?

A Distillery District startup asked me why their bounce rate was 80%. Five minutes on their site and I knew why:
No clear message about what they actually do. Generic stock photos. A "Learn More" button that went nowhere.
The fix isn't more design it's better content planning.
Before you build (or rebuild):
Write down the ONE thing you want visitors to know
Map out the customer journey (awareness → interest → action)
Create content that answers "why should I care?"
Clear messaging beats beautiful design with confusing copy. Every time. Toronto customers are busy make it obvious why they should choose you.

Is your design skillset ready to launch into the future? 🚀 Unpopular opinion: if you're not coding, you're getting left in the cosmic dust. ✨ Full-stack is the only orbit!
