The ridge board is the long board at the peak of a roof where the rafters meet.

Its main role is to help align the rafters and keep the roof geometry clean. Each common rafter runs from the wall top plate up to the ridge board. When the ridge board is straight and correctly positioned, the rafters can meet evenly at the top.

This makes the roof frame easier to assemble and helps the roof planes stay consistent.

The ridge board is not always the main structural beam, but it plays a major role in layout and alignment. Without proper alignment at the ridge, the rafters can sit unevenly, making the roof harder to sheath and finish.
