🎾 Coach’s Tip Tuesday with Charles Gembes

How to Handle a High Forehand from the Baseline
One of the toughest shots players face is a forehand that bounces high above shoulder level. Instead of backing away or trying to muscle the ball, learn to use your footwork and timing to stay in control.

Charles’ Top Tips:

✅ Move Your Feet Early
Recognize the high bounce as soon as your opponent makes contact. Get into position quickly so you’re balanced before you swing.

✅ Create the Right Contact Point
If possible, step forward and take the ball on the rise to rob your opponent of time. If the ball gets too high, create space by adjusting your feet and strike the ball slightly in front of your body.

✅ Use Your Legs
Stay athletic with your knees bent. Drive upward through the shot using your legs instead of relying only on your arm. This helps generate controlled power while maintaining balance.

✅ Maintain a Smooth Swing
Keep your racquet head accelerating through contact with a relaxed, fluid motion. Avoid chopping down on the ball or over-swinging, which often leads to errors.

✅ Recover Quickly
After your follow-through, recover back to the middle of the court and prepare for the next shot. Good recovery is just as important as hitting the forehand itself.

Coach Charles Says:
“High forehands don’t have to be defensive shots. With early preparation, strong footwork, and a balanced swing, you can turn a difficult bounce into an opportunity to stay aggressive and take control of the rally.”
