This year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) is about Breaking the Bias. It is about envisioning a world free of gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.
Help by actively calling out injustices against women and refusing to participate in discriminatory practices.

What do women expect from a gender equal society?
• We want to be able to envision ourselves in any career we dream of, free of gender stigma, from heavy industrial to science and technology,
• We want to be seen for the things we accomplish and not for our appearances,
• We want equal pay for the work we do,
• We want our diversity, from race to disabilities, to be seen as a positive contribution that is celebrated and valued.

A few Canadian gender bias facts:
1. 30% of women aged 15 or older report experiencing sexual assault at least once. This rate is three times higher for Indigenous women than non-indigenous.
2. Statistics Canada showed that women in Canada earned an average of 76.8 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2019.
3. Women make up just over half of the Canadian population, yet only comprise 19.5% of the board members for Canada’s top 500 companies and hold just 8.5% of the highest-paid positions in Canada’s top 100 listed companies.
4. One woman or girl is killed every 2.5 days in Canada. Approximately 160 women were victims of femicide in 2020.
