Tragedy Hits Gloucester Fishing Community

Another tragic loss has shaken the fishing town of Gloucester, a close-knit community with more than 400 years of fishing history. The city is well known for both its deep connection to the sea and the dangers that come with it. Gloucester also inspired The Perfect Storm, based on the FV Andrea Gail, which was lost at sea in 1991.

Captain Gus Sanfilippo was well known and respected in the community. He was a fifth-generation commercial fisherman who worked out of Gloucester, fishing on Georges Bank. He and his vessel, the Lily Jean, were featured in a 2012 episode of the History Channel’s Nor’Easter Men, which showed the tough and dangerous conditions fishermen face, often spending up to 10 days at sea.

Vito Giacalone, head of the Gloucester Fishing Community Preservation Fund, spoke about his close bond with Sanfilippo, saying they were like brothers. He shared how deeply painful it is to lose someone with such strong character and care for others.

Gloucester Mayor Paul Lundberg said the names of those lost aboard the Lily Jean will be added to the city’s memorial, which honors the thousands of fishermen who have lost their lives at sea.
