One morning, I woke up to find our modem on the floor, broken. There was no Wi-Fi, and my first reaction could have been frustration. Instead, I chose to gently and calmly talk to my son. Rather than asking, "Why did you break it?" in anger, I wanted to understand what had happened from his perspective.
I knew that staying connected with my child was more important than reconnecting to the internet. By approaching him with kindness instead of blame, I hoped he would feel safe enough to tell me the truth and help me understand what led him do it.
(“I broke it because I wanted to see the motherboard inside,” he said. Because of this statement, I chose to think that a tiny Steve Jobs was in my house. The thought made me feel better.
Now, I’m planning to buy more electronic stuffs for him to break and explore. 😊.)
