Netflix primarily uses a combination of various technologies and to build and operate its streaming service. As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, Netflix's tech stack includes:
Java: Netflix relies heavily on Java for building its backend services. The company has developed and open-sourced a number of Java-based tools and frameworks.
Spring Framework: Netflix uses the Spring Framework, a popular Java-based framework, for building scalable and modular applications. Spring provides a comprehensive infrastructure for developing Java applications.
JavaScript and React: For the user interface, Netflix utilizes JavaScript and the React library. React allows for the creation of interactive and dynamic user interfaces, providing a smooth and responsive experience for users.
Node.js: Netflix uses Node.js for some of its server-side operations. Node.js is known for its lightweight and efficient handling of asynchronous tasks, making it suitable for building scalable network applications.
NGINX: NGINX is employed as a reverse proxy server to manage and optimize the delivery of content, improving the overall performance and scalability of the platform.
Amazon Web Services (AWS): Netflix is known for its extensive use of cloud services, and AWS is a key player in their infrastructure. AWS provides scalable and reliable cloud computing solutions that Netflix utilizes for storage, computing power, and content delivery.
Cassandra: Netflix uses Apache Cassandra, a highly scalable and distributed NoSQL database, to store and manage vast amounts of data. Cassandra's ability to handle large amounts of data across multiple commodity servers aligns well with Netflix's needs.
Eureka: Eureka is a service registry used by Netflix for locating services in the cloud. It allows services to find and communicate with each other efficiently.
Ribbon: Ribbon is a client-side load balancer that Netflix uses to distribute incoming network traffic across multiple servers to ensure optimal performance and availability.
Hystrix: Netflix developed Hystrix as a library for handling faults and latency tolerance. It helps control and prevent cascading failures across distributed systems.
