Part 2! Check out the first one if you haven't! And please read the caption for a little nuance/disclaimer! Thank you 😊 really appreciate everyone who is watching these. It can be a bit scary for me to post my face and opinions online so I really appreciate the support I've been receiving.

PSA!!! WE SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO CRITICIZE ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT!!! I AM NOT SAYING "LET'S BE NICE TO PEOPLE DOING WAR CRIMES/GENOCIDE/FRACKING/PROMOTING AI DATA CENTRES/ETC", I AM NOT SAYING RACISTS & MISOGYNISTS SHOULDN'T BE SHAMED - YES THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE!!!

I'm talking about regional and municipal level government officials who are being targeted with absolutely vile, sometimes threatening, abuse and harassment online. Posts with HUNDREDS of comments calling women horrible names, slurs, attacking their appearance rather than criticizing their actions or their stance on policies or projects. We should be able to share our opinions. But I don't think saying something like "Carney supporting new pipelines is f*cked up" is the same as "this disgusting inbr*d b*tch r*tard should be afraid to show her ugly face in town since she voted for/against this local government project" (all comments I reference are either direct quotes or very closely quoting actual comments I have seen recently about elected women in our region).

As citizens we need to be able to critique, advocate, and protest. I'm not saying advocacy and activism has to be palatable, or that we should coddle people in positions of power! But not only does harassment and abusive language harm the mental health of others, it can muddy the waters and dilute the message when it comes to the impact on local government decision making. Personally, I'm not going to seek out and listen to a social media post saying I'm a braindead loser for supporting or opposing a certain project, and change my stance accordingly. What I am going to do is carefully read and consider correspondence I receive outlining folks' issues and concerns, and keep those perspectives in mind along with all the factors I consider when making decisions at the council table.

THANK YOU for watching and don't call people slurs online btw it is very cringe!! 🥰

What makes a "good" councillor? These are just a few qualities or skills that I think are helpful for local government elected officials! There are many more I could list! Let me know what qualities you think a good leader should have, or if you'd like me to mention a few more.

Like Canadians everywhere, I am holding the people of Tumbler Ridge in my heart.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, we have also seen the rapid spread of misinformation and disinformation targeting the transgender community. Before police had even identified the suspect, right-wing influencers online were pushing false claims about an “epidemic” of trans violence. This narrative is not supported by evidence.

Research from the Violence Prevention Project at Hamline University shows that in mass shootings, defined as four or more fatalities in public places with no connection to other criminal activity, fewer than 1% of perpetrators were transgender. The overwhelming majority were cisgender men. We also know from research at the Williams Institute that transgender people are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators.

Tragedies should never be weaponized to divide communities or fuel stigma. Spreading fear and misinformation does nothing to support grieving families and it does nothing to make communities safer.

What Tumbler Ridge needs right now is compassion, mental health supports, and space to grieve, not culture-war politics imported from elsewhere.

We can hold two truths at once: we can demand accountability and a thorough investigation, and we can reject the targeting of an already vulnerable community. In moments like this, leadership means choosing facts over fear, and care over cruelty.

To give the community space to grieve and to prevent further harm or misinformation, further comments have been turned off on this post.
