Have an emergency fund

Most people retire with a financial plan. Few retire with a happiness plan.
My psychology background may seem odd for financial planning—until I realized money is only half the equation.
After years of watching clients navigate the "now what?" moment of retirement, here's what I've learned:
The happiest retirees don't just stop working. They start living intentionally.
8 moves that make the difference:

Own your mornings. No boss, no alarm—sounds great until every day feels like Saturday with no plans. Satisfying Daily Routines = freedom.

Learn something hard. Piano. Pottery. Spanish. Your brain doesn't have an expiration date. Stay Sharp.

Make your "No Regrets" list. Not a bucket list—the things you'd kick yourself for NOT doing.

Go somewhere that scares you a little. 65% of retirees dream of travel. Be in the percentage that actually books the ticket.

Redecorate like you mean it. Your home should reflect who you are NOW, not who you were at 45.

Take a real retreat. Not a vacation. A pause to ask: "What do I actually want next?"

Get digital. Ask your grandkids (or honestly, any 6-year-old works). Staying connected = staying relevant.

Become a foodie. Four years in South Korea changed my entire relationship with food. Chopsticks included.

Move your body. The happiest retirees are almost always the healthiest ones. Walk. Bike. Swim. Just move.

Retirement isn't the finish line. It's the starting gun.
The question isn't "Can I afford to retire?" It's "What am I retiring TO?"
What would be on YOUR no-regrets list?
