An appraisal looks official.

It breaks down all the components of a ring.

And the appraised price is usually a lot higher than the price tag, so it makes you feel like you’re getting something worth more than what you’re paying.

But a lot of appraisals are done by the store itself.

✨ Add a markup (sometimes 1.5-2x)
✨ And call that the appraised value

I know this because I did it.

But what I saw over the years was updated appraisals required by the insurance provider, and some not even honouring the replacement cost of a lost or stolen ring because the appraisal was so obviously inflated.

I’ve also met so many people who told me how great a deal they got on a ring because it was appraised so much higher than what they paid.

Yes, it’s important to compare rings, but it’s more important to know when to stop.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is find someone to help you sift through the options and narrow down what’s actually right for you.

If a diamond’s price seems too good to be true, it probably is.

You find a lower priced diamond and think you found a good deal, but you need to ask yourself why it’s priced lower.

Small differences in cut, clarity, fluorescence, or proportions can dramatically change how a diamond looks, and how it’s priced.

So when the price seems too good to be true, it’s usually because something’s being de emphasized, not that you got lucky.

Good buying isn’t about finding the cheapest diamond. It’s about understanding why it’s priced the way it is.
