If youâve ever been shown an appraisal to prove a ringâs value, you need to know this.
An appraisal looks official.
It breaks down all the components of a ring.
And the appraised price is usually a lot higher than the price tag, so it makes you feel like youâre getting something worth more than what youâre paying.
But a lot of appraisals are done by the store itself.
⨠They take the ring details
⨠Add a markup (sometimes 1.5-2x)
⨠And call that the appraised value
I know this because I did it.
But what I saw over the years was updated appraisals required by the insurance provider, and some not even honouring the replacement cost of a lost or stolen ring because the appraisal was so obviously inflated.
Iâve also met so many people who told me how great a deal they got on a ring because it was appraised so much higher than what they paid.

Hereâs the thing.
⨠An appraisal isnât an independent valuation of a ring.
⨠Itâs not a certificate of quality.
⨠And when itâs done by the store, itâs sometimes used to justify the price.
So if youâre shown an appraisal as a reason to buy a ring, know itâs a sales tool. Not proof of anything.

If youâre looking at rings right now and want to know the difference between whatâs real and whatâs sales technique, comment RING and Iâll send you the link. đ
Most engagement ring guidance is focused on what to buy, not how to evaluate it.
Letâs change that. đ
If youâve ever gone to Reddit for engagement ring advice, this is important.
Reddit seems like the perfect place.
People whoâve done this before.
No agenda.
Not trying to sell you anything.
Just honest opinions from real buyers.
But you donât know them. You donât know where they got their information from, or whether theyâve actually bought something close to what youâre looking at.
And someone with a few upvotes sounds just as confident as someone with hundreds.
What you end up with is 50 strangers, all sounding confident, and all pointing you in slightly different directions.

Reddit can be great for a lot of things. But for a decision as big as an engagement ring, crowdsourcing anonymous opinions isnât a second opinion.
Itâs more information without a way to know which direction is the right one for you.
So if youâve been on Reddit trying to figure this out, ask yourself honestly if youâre feeling more confident or more confused. Thatâll tell you everything you need to know.

Engagement ring shopping can be hard. Reddit threads, unfortunately, can add pressure and confusion.
I work 1:1 with men who are overwhelmed, stressed, and kept up at 2am wondering if theyâre doing something wrong.
If youâre currently looking at rings and want to make sure you buy the right one at the right price, comment RING and Iâll send you the link. đ
And if you want 1:1 support through the whole engagement ring buying process, letâs talk. đ
One of the first things I learned selling engagement rings was also one of the most complicated.
Two rings in the same price range. But one of them is going to be a problem within a year.
When youâre comparing options, youâre looking at surface level choices. A curated presentation of options.
What youâre not seeing is the actual construction of the ring.
How itâll hold up to daily wear, whether the prongs will actually keep the stones secure.
So you pick a ring based on the style and price. And then those quality problems show up later.
If youâre looking at rings right now and one is noticeably cheaper than a comparable option, stop and ask why. Thereâs always a reason.
And if youâre unsure of what youâre looking at is actually good, comment RING and Iâll send you the link to an independent expert second opinion before you commit. đ
Things Iâll never understand as an independent engagement ring advisor. Part 3.
Why do you trust a salespersonâs reassurance more than your own instincts?
When something feels off and the salesperson says itâs fine, thatâs not a second opinion. Thatâs a sales environment telling you to keep moving forward.
If your gut is telling you somethingâs off, even if you canât quite say what it is, thereâs a reason. Dismissing that feeling is where regret starts.
Buying an engagement ring is arguably one of the most significant purchases youâll make.

The more you research engagement rings, the more confused you get. Thereâs actually a psychological reason for that. đ

Why is âjust go look aroundâ treated like real advice?
Every jewellery store has different inventory, different training for their staff, different pricing strategies.
So shopping around doesnât mean youâll find the right ring, but it does mean youâll see a lot of them!
And the more you look, the more choices you have, the more opinions you get, and the harder it actually is to make a decision.
Yes, itâs important to compare rings, but itâs more important to know when to stop.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is find someone to help you sift through the options and narrow down whatâs actually right for you.

Engagement ring shopping isnât about being the first to the finish line.
Itâs about being the most sure.
Knowing that you got the right ring, at the right price, within the right timeline.
Donât get me wrong, sometimes it needs to be done quickly. But fast should never be done over quality.

If a diamondâs price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
You find a lower priced diamond and think you found a good deal, but you need to ask yourself why itâs priced lower.
Small differences in cut, clarity, fluorescence, or proportions can dramatically change how a diamond looks, and how itâs priced.
So when the price seems too good to be true, itâs usually because somethingâs being de emphasized, not that you got lucky.
Good buying isnât about finding the cheapest diamond. Itâs about understanding why itâs priced the way it is.
This gap in understanding is where most pricing mistakes actually happen.
