Did you know that there's a difference between reading and reading comprehensively?

Reading is defined as a cognitive process that involves decoding symbols to arrive at the meaning. It is the translation of text into sounds or spoken words. Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension, fluency, and motivation.

Reading Comprehension on the other hand, is defined as the ability to process text, understand its meaning, and to integrate it with what the reader already knows.

So now I hope you see the difference between the two and the implications that arise from each. When you merely read, you're just recognizing the text and it's meaning at face value. However when you read to comprehend and understand, you are able to decipher the meaning of the text and connect it with other ideas thereby building your intellectual abilities. So when you've been comprehensively reading certain passages or poems in class and discussing them based on literary aspects of meaning of phrases, poetic devices, characterization, settings, themes etc you'll be able to use those very skills in your exams when presented with questions based on poems and passages you've never read before. And that's the key secret to acing your literature papers.
