Last weekend’s Fort Charlotte Family Market was a charitable initiative designed to provide meaningful relief to residents facing the rising cost of living. It is just one of several ways we are working to help families stretch their grocery budgets.
Every month, we purchase thousands of dollars in food vouchers from some of the largest grocery retailers in New Providence to assist residents in need. This market simply represents another approach to providing relief while learning more about how we can make food more affordable.
Many of the products offered, including bread, eggs, limes, corned beef, diapers, and other household essentials, were sourced from local wholesalers, while others were imported to secure the best possible prices. The objective is simple: identify opportunities to lower costs, explore alternative supply chains, and expand access to quality, affordable products.
Pop up markets will never solve the long term challenge of food affordability. However, it can provide immediate, temporary relief to families who need it most while also sparking important conversations about how we work together to bring prices down over the long term.
We’ll continue working alongside the Trade Commission, which has undertaken extensive research into food pricing across neighboring markets, to help identify alternative supply chains and bring greater awareness to quality, affordable brands. This information has already been shared with some grocery retailers, and the Commission remains committed to doing its part to address the rising cost of food.
The cost of food has become too high for too many Bahamian families. Doing nothing is not an option. It will take collaboration between the public and private sectors, innovation, and a willingness to explore new ideas if we are to deliver meaningful, lasting relief.
At the end of the day, we all share the same objective: making food more affordable for Bahamian families. That is where the conversation should remain centered.

🚫 NO CASH will be accepted inside the market
We will have a Cash Exchange Station available for residents without VISA debit/credit cards. Cash can be exchanged for VISA Gift Cards in $25, $50, and $100 increments, which can be used to shop inside the market.
