Evelyn came downstairs when she heard her husband's voice.
She had waited in the bedroom for some minutes since she heard her husband return but her husband didn't come the bedroom.
Mama I thought my husband had returned. Evelyn asked Mama. I'm also waiting for him. He haven't returned. Mama lied. But I heard his voice from the bedroom or am I hearing double? Evelyn asked. If he returns he will surely come to the bedroom. Mama said
Walter woke up in the middle of the night only to see Nneka lay next to him in the guest bedroom.
He woke up in the mid night. What am I doing here? He asked Nneka. You had a bit too much to drink last night. Nneka said to Chief Walter. Where is my wife? He asked.
I'm also your wife. Nneka said. Will you stop that. Chief Walter said and stood up. He went and opened the door and went back to the masters bedroom.
His wife was asleep when he got to the masters bedroom. He lay on the bed about to sleep.
Where are you coming from? Evelyn asked him. You should be sleeping babe. Chief Walter said. Where are you coming from Walter? Evelyn asked again.
I had too much to drink last night and I slept in my car. Chief Walter said.
So you didn't sleep in the same bedroom with that woman your mother brought for you? Evelyn asked. I did not. Chief Walter lied.
Evelyn didn't want to argue, so she just kept quiet and slept. She didn't want to wake their daughter.
Just go back to bed babe. Chief Walter said and he was about to touch Evelyn but she removed his hand from her body.
Chief Walter just slept off. Immediately he woke up the next morning he went to his mother and told her to leave.
You are asking me your mother to leave your house? Mama asked Chief Walter.
Mama you want to destroy my marriage and I can't allow that. It's only right you leave. Leave with this woman you brought here and don't ever bring her back again. Chief Walter said.
Walter! You chased me your mother out of your house. Your mother. Let it be known that I tried my best to remove the spell this woman is using on you but you refused to be helped. I will leave and I will never step foot in your house again. Mama said and angrily went into the bedroom to start packing her bags.
That's not what I mean mama. You are always welcome to my house but you can't keep bringing different women for me to marry. I am okay with my wife. Chief Walter said.
Mama didn't reply Chief Walter. Nneka let's leave.
Immediately Mama left with Nneka a new number started calling Chief Walter. He picked up the call and it was Charles.
You have three days to give me my money. Charles said. You said one week. So I still have 5days left. Chief Walter said.
We have only five business days. So you have three days left. Your secret will be exposed if I don't get my full payment. Charles said and hung up the call.

I never knew our dog was my late sister.

The night my sister died, I learned that silence can scream louder than thunder. The hospital bed still smelled like her hair cream, her clothes still hung in the wardrobe, and her laughter still echoed in every corner of our house. Yet she was gone. Just like that. A single breath stolen by sickness that refused to listen to our prayers.
Chioma was not just my sister. She was my best friend, my second mother, my secret keeper. She knew every fear I carried, every dream I whispered, and every tear I tried to hide. When she passed away, the world did not just lose a girl, I lost a part of myself.
We were orphans with only each other. We fought life together and promised never to break apart. But death broke the promise I trusted most. When they lowered her into the grave, they might have believed they buried a body. But I knew they buried a piece of me too.
I threw myself into work after that day. I built companies the way others built families. I stayed awake at night building success, so I wouldn’t have time to remember her absence. I became a wealthy, independent woman with no one to call home.
But grief doesn’t leave just because money comes. Pain does not disappear just because you build walls. Chioma’s voice still whispered in my dreams. Her laughter still followed me in the silence. The house felt too empty, too quiet, too dead.
So I bought a large, trained police dog. Not because I feared thieves, but because I feared silence. I needed footsteps. I needed breathing. I needed something living in the house with me. Still, the loneliness stayed. So I hired a live-in chef. I hired a security gateman. I tried to fill the hole grief left behind.
But some holes are not meant to be filled by humans.

One night, when the whole house had fallen asleep, the gateman, Samuel, listened to a ghost story on the radio to stay awake at the gate. He lowered the volume when he heard something move near the garden. Under the moonlight, he saw the police dog shaking its tail, staring at the mansion like it recognized something unseen.
He pointed his torchlight lazily at the dog… and then froze.
The dog’s body began to stretch, melt, and fold into another shape. Fur vanished. Limbs twisted. Bones cracked softly. And before him stood a human.
A young woman.
With short hair.
Familiar eyes.
The same face on the portrait in the living room.
Chioma.
She walked toward him, slow, silent, emotionless. Her voice crawled out like cold wind.
“Leave this house. Leave. I alone is enough to guard it. You are not needed.”
She disappeared instantly.
Samuel gasped, shaking, wiping his eyes, trying to believe it was his imagination.
But then the dog appeared again. And before he could blink, the transformation happened a second time. Fiercer. Faster. Darker.
“If you love your life, I give you three days. Leave. Or you will run mad till eternity.”
He dropped his torch and buried his face between his legs to avoid seeing her.
The spirit leaned in, whispering into his bones.
“I am here… to stay.”
And from that night, the house was no longer silent.
Something dead had come home.
And it refused to leave.

Chief Walter and Evelyn has been married for five years without a child.
It was finally revealed that Mr. Walter was impotent. He couldn't father a child. All this years and Evelyn thought she was the problem.
Chief Walter begged her not to tell anyone about his situation. The world will laugh at me. Don't let anyone know. Chief Walter said to his wife.
What are we going to do now? Your family are already calling me a w!tch. They think I refused to get pregnant for you, or I'm barr3n.
Your mother the last time she visited threatened that she is going to bring another wife for you. Evelyn said.
Don't mind what my mother say. We will find a solution. Chief Walter said.
What solution, my husband? Is it until your family kick me out of your house? Evelyn asked. No one is kicking you out of my house. Chief Walter said.
Okay should we adopt? Evelyn asked. We can't adopt. If we adopt everyone will know that I'm impotent. I'm trying to protect my image here. Chief Walter said.
Then what do you suggest we do? Evelyn asked.
Let pay Charles to get you pregnant. Chief Walter said.
What? Charles our Gardner? Never!!! He is just an ordinary Gardner. Evelyn said.
Charles have been working for me for seven years now. I trust he would keep his mouth shut after this. Chief Walter said.
I can't, I won't. It's better we adopt a baby than for me to allow an ordinary Gardner to have séx with me. Do you know what you are asking me to do Walter. Evelyn asked her husband.
I know my wife, I know it's sounds crazy but this is the best thing we can do. This is the best sh0t we can take. Chief Walter said.
I can't. I won't. It's better we adopt. I say we ad0pt a baby than for me to allow a gardener sleep with me. Evelyn said.
She was really angry with what her husband suggested that night. she went to bed angry.
Nnem, mommy biko Zie. Chief Walter begged the wife.
Walter please leave me. I will not do what you ask of me. I can't allow a gardner have séx with me. How would he look at me after that? How would he rate me? Evelyn asked the husband.
I will tell him to leave after the deed have been done. I will pay him off to leave the state. Chief Walter said.
I still won't accept. Are you even sure he is going to accept? Evelyn asked Chief Walter.
It's left for you to accept. If you accept. Charles side is just a piece of cake. Please Do this for me. Because of the love you have for me. Please. Chief Walter said.
I will have to think about it. Evelyn said and slept off that night.
She woke up the next morning and realized that her husband wasn't in bed.
She went to the living room and saw the Chief thinking.
He was lost in thought that he didn't even know when his wife came into the living room.
Chief. Evelyn called her husband. He didn't respond. She had to go touch him and immediately he came back to himself.
How long have you been standing there? Chief Walter asked.
For a while. Evelyn replied. I'm sorry, I was humm.. before Chief Walter could complete his statement, Evelyn replied him.
"I will do it". Evelyn said. What? Chief Walter asked. I will get sleep with Charles or whoever you choose to get pregnant. Evelyn said.
And immediately Chief Walter stood up and hugged Evelyn. Thank you. Chief Walter said to the wife.
