You may have heard the news that has come out in the past 24 hours. As independent practitioners it saddens us to see fellow optometrists in corporate settings treated in such a way. The focus for any optometrist should always be on treating a patient, not pushing sales on a customer.

Every optometrist regardless of where they work deserves the time and support needed to focus on eyecare. Rushing consults and pushing sales is not where optometry should be heading.

As an independent local practice, we are grateful that this is not our reality. Our patients come first, our consults are long and thorough, and you would never get a whiff of reprimands or pay cuts because, we would never push something that you simply do not need.

We can only hope for our fellow optometrists that this discussion will lead to positive change across the country allowing optometrists to go back to what matters, eye care. Optometry is a medical practice not a retail store.
