What do you get when you combine a Southern Formula with a 1? An offshore weapon that’s just as comfortable at rest as it is underway.
We recently installed a Seakeeper into this 24’ Southern Formula.
The owner loved the boat’s offshore performance and ability to punch through rough conditions, but like many deep-V hulls, stability at rest was its weak point. Long days chasing game fish beyond the shelf were becoming tiring, so the goal was simple: improve comfort and stability without compromising the boat.
After assessing the vessel, we determined the unused centre hatch was the ideal location for the gyro. Space was at a premium, so careful planning was key. We designed a dedicated 12V system featuring 400Ah of lithium battery capacity, supported by a 50A DC-DC charger from the main alternator and an AC/DC charger for shore charging.
The mounting system required substantial reinforcement to handle the loads generated by the gyro. We bonded an aluminium mounting plate to the existing fibreglass structure, added welded aluminium supports tied into the bulkhead and stringers, then glassed and flow-coated everything to maintain an OEM finish.
With the foundations complete, we installed the lithium battery, lowered the Seakeeper into place, and completed the electrical system. Integration with the Raymarine Axiom Pro was seamless, allowing full monitoring and control through the display.
Then came sea trials—and the results exceeded expectations. Both underway and at rest, the transformation was remarkable. Offshore chop felt dramatically reduced, making long days on the water more comfortable and enjoyable.
The owner has since put plenty of hours on the system with faultless performance and couldn’t be happier with the result.
Whether you love fishing, cruising, or simply keeping family and friends comfortable onboard, a Seakeeper gyro can completely change your boating experience. Get in touch to see what system is right for your vessel.
