Why is my real estate agent asking for my ID?
If you’re buying or selling property, you may now be asked to verify your identity before your transaction progresses.
As of 1 July 2026, new Australian legislation requires real estate agencies to complete identity verification as part of the buying and selling process. These changes have been introduced to help combat fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes, creating greater security for everyone involved.
For most clients, the process is straightforward, completed online through a secure platform, and only takes a few minutes.
In this carousel, we’ll explain:
- Why identity verification is now required
- When you’ll be asked to complete it
- What identification you’ll need
- How your personal information is securely handled
At Fletcher Riley, we’re committed to making every step of your property journey as smooth and transparent as possible. If you have any questions about these new requirements, our team is always happy to help.
Save this post for future reference, or send it to someone who’s planning to buy or sell a property.
