Lateral Snapping Hip💫
External Lateral hip snapping is thought to be caused by either the TFL or Glute Max flipping over the greater trochanter most likely with hip flexion/extension- however lots of folks can reproduce their issue with rotation.
Folks experiencing lateral hip snapping often report:
🔻catching/"giving way" sensation of the hip
🔻tightness felt on the outside of the hip
🔻audible snapping
🔻maybe painful 😖; esp to underlying bursa
🔻may be noticeable with flexion/extension or rotation
This area can get a bit more inflamed than what we generally see in INTERNAL snapping hip because of a pesky lil bursa that sits right there and that f'n ITB originates from the area. So, while I don't tend to 'worry' about extra-articular hip snapping, I do like try and move this one along if folks are having symptoms.
🎥TFL stretch: TFL is a hip internal rotator, abductor and flexor - so to stretch, we do the opposite: extend leg and cross behind 📍externally rotate hip by opening foot outward❗️square hips to the front ❗️📍 gently push hip out laterally 👉🏻you should feel the stretch through the lateral hip and a bit in the b***y region
🎥TFL smash: to find TFL find greater trochanter (hip bone) sneak a little up and forward from there- do the motions described above, you should feel it pop- NOW 📍pin a LAX ball between you and the ground 📍move your HIP through flexion and extension to get some cross friction massage happening in there. 📍Hurt so good.
🎥Glute Max: 📍find b***y📍pin ball,📍cross leg up and over📍roll ball up and down, back and forth
