If your spouse, friend or coworker has hard hearing, there are plenty of ways to help him or her cope and thrive. Here are 5 Dos and Donts, plus a bonus piece of advice, on how to support them.

Dos:
✅ Get their attention with a tap or wave
✅ Speak to tehm face to face
✅ Speak slowly and clearly
✅ Rephrase what you’ve said with different words if they misheard
✅ Be patient as it goes a long way

Donts:
❌ Don’t shout or clap at them
❌ Don’t speak with your head turned
❌ Don’t speak so loudly and rapidly
❌ Don’t simply just keep repeating the same phrase in a louder volume
❌ Don’t get frustrated with them

Finally, be an advocate for them. Show support by making people visiting or in group situations aware in a respectful manner.
