Beyond the Birth

Have you ever heard of the Rhombus of Michaelis? ✨
This magical shape, located at the base of the spine, plays a crucial role during labor and birth. Also known as the ‘Sacral Plateau,’ it expands during childbirth, allowing more room for baby’s passage and easing the birthing process. 🤰🌟
Embracing this natural phenomenon can empower both mums and newborns for a smoother journey into the world. 💖
It also helps doulas, support persons and care providers know that babe is starting to make their way closer to being earthside without the need for internal examinations😉

Labour and birth choices are as unique as each individual’s journey into parenthood. 💫 While some may find solace in the comforts of home birth, others feel safest surrounded by the expertise of hospital staff. And for those drawn to the unassisted path of free birth, it’s a deeply personal decision.
As a doula, I respect every birthing person’s choice, understanding that what feels right for one may not resonate with another. 💖✨
Empowering informed decisions is at the heart of my practice, supporting you wherever your labour and birth journey leads.

Let’s talk cervical effacement and its incredible role in labour! 🤰✨
Effacement, the thinning and shortening of the cervix, is a crucial milestone in the birthing journey. From early effacement to full effacement, each stage signifies progress as your body prepares for childbirth. 💫
Fully effaced? That means your cervix is 100% thinned out, paving the way for your baby’s descent into the birth canal. 🌟💖
For mums-to-be, reaching full effacement is a significant step, indicating that your body is primed and ready for active labour to begin.
Do you need someone to tell you that you are fully effaced? Absolutely not! Your body will instinctively go through each stage of labour, regardless of whether someone is telling you how many cm dilated you are or not.
Some people want to know how far along they are. Others don’t. As a doula, I always go through the pros and cons of both choices with my clients during our prenatal sessions. A simple number may sound like just that, but when a woman has been in labour for hours and is told that she is only 4cm, this can be enough for her to give up.
Does that mean that baby is still hours away from being born? Sometimes. Does it mean baby can still be born in the next hour? Sometimes!
Make an informed choice on cervical checks PRIOR to labour. Then, if you go against this choice, your doing it with empowerment. You know the facts and the ball is in YOUR court.
