Did you know there is a code of practice for roadworks in WA and all Traffic Management Companies are required to follow it in conjunction with the AGTTM

Roadworks are a necessary aspect of maintaining and improving our roads, but they can also cause disruptions and hazards for road users. That's why it's crucial to have a set of guidelines in place to ensure the safety and efficiency of these works. In Western Australia, the Code of Practice for Works on Roads serves as the foundation for traffic management during roadworks.
The Code of Practice also places a greater emphasis on the use of technology in traffic management. For example, it encourages the use of real-time traffic information systems and dynamic message signs to improve traffic
flow and reduce delays for drivers. Additionally, the Code of Practice now includes guidelines for the use of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for traffic management and monitoring during roadworks.
Another important change is the inclusion of specific guidelines for the management of pedestrian and cyclist safety during roadworks. This includes measures to ensure continuity of pedestrian and cyclist access, as well as provisions for the safe movement of these road users through roadwork zones.

Overall, the Code of Practice is a comprehensive guide that sets out the standards and best practices for traffic management during roadworks in Western Australia. By following these guidelines, roadwork planners and operators can ensure the safety and efficiency of their works, while minimizing disruptions and hazards for road users. It's important to note that the Code of Practice for Works on Roads is a living document, which means that it can be updated periodically to reflect the changing needs of the road users, safety and technology. It's important for the roadwork planners and operators to stay up to date with the latest version of the code, as well as any updates or amendments that may be issued.
In conclusion, the Code of Practice is an essential tool for ensuring the safety and efficiency of roadworks in Western Australia. By following the guidelines set out in the Code of Practice, roadwork planners and operators can take the necessary steps to protect road users from harm and minimize disruptions during roadworks. It is important for the roadwork planners and operators to stay up to date with the latest version of the code, as well as any updates or amendments that may be issued.

Plan

Every road construction project needs a TMP. The strategy should include temporary traffic management to safely route traffic around or through or past the construction zone. You should also have a plan for heavy equipment, construction trucks, and people within the work zone.

Traffic control

The work zone should have an advanced warning area with warning signs alerting motorists of upcoming changes in driving conditions, a transition area with traffic control devices for lane closures and traffic pattern shifts, a buffer area, the work area, and a termination area to allow traffic to resume back to normal and a sign indicating the work zone has ended.

Be vigilant

Regardless of your employment obligations, constantly be aware of your surroundings. Avoid stepping behind backing trucks or heavy equipment's swing radius. Face traffic or have a spotter while your back is turned. Spotters should also watch cars and heavy equipment within the work zone to warn employees of risk.
