As Caravan/Camping systems are becoming larger and larger in capacity, some OEM manufacturers are changing over to a 48VDC system from a standard 12V or 24V installation. The advantages of this are lower current at higher voltage, therefore a smaller cable size is required, smaller circuit protection and less overall weight. The disadvantages of this, now it's far harder to charge from your car alternator while traveling. This is due to the fact that most of the products available in the market are made to fit 12V or 24V applications alone.

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/48-8A Isolated DC-DC Charger (ORI124838120) is the ideal solution as it takes a 12V input from your vehicle's start battery / alternator and steps up the voltage to 48V to charge your 48VDC House batteries while on the go. As the unit is stepping up from 12V to 48V, what is happening fundamentally is current is lower on the output but, from a power point of view, the Watts remain equal at about 380W. The same also will be influenced by such factors as: voltage drop, temperature, cable size, state of charge of batteries, internal resistance etc.

Does your Lithium Battery feature built-in Fire Suppression?

Each VoltGo lithium battery comes equipped with 2 S-Type hot aerosol fire extinguishing devices in the battery lid, directly above the battery assembly. (The smaller VLRV1280A uses only 1 unit.) This product is small in volume, requires no pressure storage or need to lay pipe network or maintenance, provides efficient & rapid fire extinguishing, is non-toxic and harmless and is especially suited for battery rooms, engine rooms, battery box and other places with relatively closed conditions. Each unit has a temperature probe to activate at the specified range.

How does the VoltGo Fire Suppression System work?

In the unlikely event that the battery’s BMS hasn’t already nullified an issue, and an internal fire has started, the fire suppressors trigger once the internal battery temperature reaches 170°C. Once activated it fills the battery case with a hot aerosol gas to combat the fire in 2 ways:

- Cooling & extinguishing effect of endothermic decomposition, which means the solid particles of the aerosol agent absorb the heat released by the fire.

- Chemical inhibition which causes the metal ions to be decomposed by the aerosol agent.

At this stage, there is no legislation in Australia that requires lithium batteries to have fire suppression, but things may change in the future.

What did the installation include?

- Features an integrated Victron MultiPlus II 48/15000 Inverter Charger, Victron 450/200 MPPT Solar charger, Victron Cerbo GX, Victron GX Touch, and Victron 4G LTE Module.

- Pre-Wired AC External Switchboard, Pre-Wired external Solar input, Pre-Wired connections for BSL B-LFP48-100E rack mount lithium batteries, Internal Busbars and Circuit Protection.

- 8x BSL B-LFP48-100E 48V 5.12kWh Rack Mount LiFePO4 Battery (40.96kWh storage) can be expanded with another 6 BSL batteries (making a total of 71.68kWh maximum battery storage).

- 46x Longi Solar 440w Hi-MO 6 Scientist LR5-54HTH 440M Solar Panels (20.24kW Solar Array).

- SMA Sunny Boy 5kW Inverter for interconnection with AC. With 13.64kW of solar power connected as DC via the Victron 450/200 MPPT and 6.6kW of solar power connected as AC via the SMA Sunny Boy PV Inverter.

What can this system run?

This SkyBox+ Off-grid system included a 15kVA Inverter Charger, 20.24kW Solar Array, and 40.96kWh Lithium battery storage in order to run water pumps, heavy machinery, lighting, and fridges in a large shed for a remote site on a rural farm. This saved the customer hundreds of thousands of dollars in running power lines out to the remote shed and paying for continuous running costs. Because the system is independent of the grid, it gives the consumer independence in energy consumption and the way they choose to use their electricity.
