When I moved to Ireland 6 years ago a local man told me something profound about the way they speak. Irish has a completely different way of seeing your emotions. Instead of saying “I’m sad,” they say “Tá brón orm.” Sadness is on me. Not inside you. Not defining you. On you. Like a coat holding cold from being outside Something you can take off at the door. And imagine that shift. Not “I’m anxious”… but anxiety is on me. Not “I’m scared”… but fear is on me. It’s no longer who you are. It’s something passing through you. And maybe that’s the quiet wisdom in a language that’s been around for over a thousand years longer than English. A reminder that emotions don’t define us. They visit.
