π¦πΊ PROPOSED GSM POINTS TEST CHANGES β WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The Australian Government has indicated a future reform of the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Points Test. The goal is to prioritise highly skilled, highly educated, and younger migrants to drive long-term productivity.
No official changes have been implemented yet. The current points system remains fully active, and the 2026β27 Migration Program has maintained 185,000 permanent places, with a strong focus (over 70%) on the Skill stream.
For applicants with 65+ points, this remains a positive window to act. We recommend focusing on:
β State nomination & Regional pathways
β Strategic profile enhancements (English, Partner points, etc.)
At NIC Migration, we are already analysing these proposed directions. We continue to help our clients navigate the current framework while preparing strategic "Plan B" options should the reforms be enacted.
π If you have an EOI lodged β Stay positive. Many reforms include transitional arrangements for those already in the queue.
π If you are planning to lodge soon β Timeliness is key. Acting under the current known rules is often safer than waiting for the unknown.
Your Australian migration journey is still very much alive. π¦πΊ

π Still on a Student Visa? Your Path to PR Might Be Closer Than You Think! π¦πΊ
We get this question every day: "Can I apply for a Subclass 491 visa while Iβm still on a Student Visa (Subclass 500)?"
The answer is YES! β
You donβt have to wait until your studies are completely over to start planning. If you are onshore in Australia, you can lodge a 491 application as long as youβve secured a State Nomination or family sponsorship and meet the points test under the General Skilled Migration program.
π Why the 491 is a Game Changer for Students:
β
Extra Points: Get an immediate 15-point boost from State Nomination.
β
Bridging Rights: Apply onshore and receive a Bridging Visa to stay in Australia while your application is processed.
β
Path to Permanent Residency: The 491 is a 5-year visa that leads directly to the Subclass 191 (Permanent Residency) after living and working in a regional area for 3 years.
π The "Decision Ready" Difference
At NIC Migration, we just celebrated a massive win for our clientβa Student Visa holder who just received his WA State Nomination for Cardiac Technician! π₯
Because we submitted a "Decision Ready" file, there were:
β No requests for further information.
β No stressful delays.
β
Just a seamless approval.
π Are You Next?
The 2026 migration landscape is shifting, and "visa hopping" rules are stricter than ever. Donβt risk your future with a DIY application. Let us map out your journey from the classroom to Australian residency.
