We're happy to have the Miami-based artist Magnus Sodamin for the Artist in Residence Program of quartier21 in MQ Vienna.

Während seines Aufenthalts entsteht im Schau- und Galerieraum PERFEKT BOX eine raumübergreifende, transdisziplinäre Installation, welche sich mit Assoziationen zur Form des menschlichen Körpers beschäftigt. Den zentralen Spannungspunkt bilden Schaufensterfiguren, welche in einem experimentellen Akt umhüllt und mit bemalten Stoffen und Leinwänden in abstrakte Formen überführt werden. Der Vorgang des Verhüllens und unsichtbar Machens löst gleichzeitig den Wunsch des Enthüllens und sichtbar Machens aus. In Magnus Sodamins Arbeit spielt die Erinnerung und der Wunsch nach Berührung eine besondere Rolle. Versteckt und verdeckt durch Sodamins Malereien finden sich Figurenelemente im Raum wieder, welche den Besucher zu einer Suche anregen. Regeln von Raum und Form sowie der menschlichen Wahrnehmung werden hinterfragt. Beim Betrachten der Ausstellung „Hide-and-Seek“ findet sich der Besucher in einem Versteckspiel wieder, bei welchem der Künstler Aspekte von bildender Kunst, Architektur und seiner persönlichen Sicht auf das Leben in einer Installation kulminiert.

During his stay Magnums Sodamin works on a transdisciplinary installation at a site-specific location of PERFEKT BOX. Working on this installation Magnus Sodamin embraces a fully immersive experience and structural experiment by working with the human figure and abstracting associations of form. In Hide-and-seek Sodamin covers a series of mannequin with his painted fabrics. The fabrics ranging from fine silk to muslin evoke tangibility and the desire for touch. Since early childhood Magnus recalls a pleasure of touch and contemplates this within his practice. Approaching play within his practice Sodamin conceals the figures in the environment of his paintings and asks the viewers to seek all revealed “moments”. In “Hide-and-Seek” Sodamin straddles the line between art, architecture and life. In this installation Sodamin takes the opportunity to confuse and confound our expectations of space and form to interrogate the real and the imagined.
