March 20 is celebrated worldwide as the International Day of Happiness.
But what does happiness actually mean? It can appear as an unexpected moment that exceeds our expectations. At the same time, it can be explained biologically—as a complex interaction of neurochemical processes in which neurotransmitters like dopamine play a key role. From a philosophical perspective, happiness goes beyond short-term pleasure; it reflects a deeper, more lasting state of inner satisfaction and fulfillment.
This raises an important question: Can happiness be actively pursued, or is it simply a matter of chance? Increasingly, research suggests that happiness can indeed be developed as a skill. Studies, including projects at the University of Braunschweig, have explored this idea and initiated programs that treat happiness as a learnable competence—even within educational settings.
For many families, happiness is also closely connected to meaningful developmental progress—this is why approaches such as Conductive Education are often experienced as a profound source of hope, empowerment, and joy.
